The Most Dangerous Phrase

As we reach the middle of the youth soccer season, many teams are beginning to feel the pull of standings, tournament races, and the desire to win. There is nothing wrong with that.

But mid-season may be the ideal time to ask an important question:

When we say, “We’re just being competitive,” what do we really mean?

A coach yells at a young player after a mistake.

A parent berates a referee after the game.

A talented player barely leaves the field while teammates sit and watch.

A team is winning by six goals and continues pressing relentlessly for more.

In each case, the explanation is often the same:

“We’re just being competitive.”

The more I hear that phrase, the more I wonder if it has become the most dangerous phrase in youth soccer.

Not because competition is bad.

Competition is one of life’s greatest teachers. It teaches preparation, effort, resilience, teamwork, and how to respond when things don’t go our way.

The problem isn’t competition.

The problem begins when adults use competition to justify behavior that serves adults more than children.

I’ll be honest. At times in my coaching journey, I felt more pulled toward winning than toward teaching. Most coaches have. The challenge isn’t whether we love competition. The challenge is whether competition helps us become better teachers of the players in our care.

The best coaches I’ve known were fiercely competitive and wanted to win.

But they never sacrificed a player’s confidence, dignity, or love of the game to achieve it.

They understood something important:

Competition is a tool for development. Development is not a tool for winning.

One day, most players won’t remember the score.

But they will remember how the adults around them made them feel.
