When we look closely at the seasons behind us, a pattern becomes impossible to ignore: the game doesn’t shape kids nearly as much as the adults around it do. The sideline voices, the car‑ride conversations, the expectations we carry, the pressure we don’t realize we’re adding- these are the things that stay with kids long after the final whistle. And as another season begins, we’re given a chance to decide whether we’ll repeat the same habits… or choose something better.
Because the truth is… most of the challenges aren’t new.
We’ve seen them before.
We’ve lived them before.
We’ve talked about them before.
And if we’re honest, we know exactly what happens when we repeat the same patterns:
Kids burn out.
Kids feel pressure.
Kids lose joy.
Kids walk away.
The numbers from the past tell the story clearly:
- 70% of kids quit sports by age 13, most saying it’s no longer fun.
- “No fun” is the #1 reason they leave.
- Only 25% of low‑income youth get to participate.
- And many leave simply because their families can’t afford the rising costs.
So instead of starting this season with a list of “changes” we need to make, maybe we start with something softer:
What have we learned?
What keeps kids in the game?
What pushes them out?
And how can we avoid repeating the past …

Each of these articles shows how much influence adults have and how much each of us can do to shape a better future.
And here’s the good news:
We don’t need to overhaul the sport.
We don’t need to reinvent anything.
We don’t need to chase shortcuts or pressure or early success.
We simply need to remember what works:
😊Joy.
• 🕊️Patience.
🤝Belonging.
⚽Small‑sided play.
• 👟Child‑centered coaching.
• 🌱Encouragement instead of pressure.
• 🔍Letting kids explore instead of rushing them.
• 🌙Protecting late bloomers instead of pushing them out.
Small things. Simple things. Things we already know.
This season is a fresh start. A clean slate. A chance to avoid past mistakes and build something better, together.
So as we step into the new season, here’s my gentle reminder:
Let the Children Play, and Everything Else Will Follow.
