“FUNdamental PRACTICE!

Most Important …Watch them Play (Game or Scrimmage)

                          … Note Strengths –or- Weaknesses

                          … Make Strength –or- Weakness Your ‘Theme’ 

Before Practice      -Arrive early and inspect the field (Safety)

                                -Greet each player by name and socialize

                                -Encourage players to greet each other and socialize

                                -Encourage them to keep a soccer ball in motion

                                -Check their homework

Step 1.  (BEGIN THE PRACTICE)

     -Have an ‘official’ beginning (Teach them a team cheer) 

     -Cover practice session rules (Concentration and Discipline)

     -Tell them what they will learn (Theme – Explanation)

     -Show them what they will learn (Theme – Demonstration)

Step 2.  (WARM-UP

     -Inside the FUNdamental Square

     -Each player with a ball

     -Developing Individual Ball Skills (Light stretching if necessary)

Step. 3.  (1 + 1

Cooperative game – Let them know There Will Be Stoppages.

·         (Players & Coaches help each other)

  • Show & Tell them… What their field must look like

     -How to lay down cones/discs for ‘the goals.’                

     -How to step off the distance between goals

     -How to step off the distance between adjacent fields

  • Show and Tell them… How to play the 1 vs. 1 game.

     -‘How to’ start the game — The Serve 

     -‘How to’ attack the opponent’s goal – 1st Attacker

     -‘How to’ defend one’s own goal – 1st Defender       -‘How to’ continue playing after a goal is scored (no stoppages)          

     -‘How the game is stopped – The Signal

    -‘How to’ report the score – Active or Inactive Rest

    -‘How to’ rotate – Getting ready to face the next opponent

    –Coach is Verbally Helpful but only with players who need help

Step. 4.  (1 vs. 1

Competitive game – Let them know there will be No Stoppages.

·         Players are attempting to score against each other.

            -Players rotate and play everyone on the team

            -Be sure to keep a record of scores

            –Coach is Verbally Silent & Takes notes of individual weaknesses

Step 5.  (Half-time Break)

     -Teach them what will take place:  Rest, Water, Review of the first half of practice

     -Prepare for the Second Half of Practice: Small Sided Games and Scrimmage

     -Hydration, Explanation, Motivation.

Step 6.  (Small-Sided Games)

– With rule(s) to improve the Theme.

  • Cooperative and Competitive

-Cooperative – Coach – Verbally Helpful while they are playing.

            -Competitive – Coach – Verbally Silent & Taking notes while they are playing.

Step 7.  (Scrimmage)

– With rule(s) to improve the Theme.

  • Cooperative and Competitive

-Cooperative – Coach – Verbally Helpful while they are playing.

       -Competitive – Coach – Verbally Silent & Taking notes while they are playing.

Step 8.  (COOL DOWN)

  Stretch and Give Individual Compliments

Step 9.  (END PRACTICE)

– Compliment the Team and Review what was Learned.

                                             – Assign homework — Play 1vs.1 at home

After Practice: 

     -Make sure all the players have a ride home.

     -Leave the field cleaner than it was when you arrived.

     -Be the last person to leave the facility.
