The SOCCERevolutions’ Bold Fee Strategy!

I have often wondered how soccer leaders would feel about the recreational community paying its fees with ‘recreational money’ (i.e., Monopoly Money) while the competitive players pay in US currency (i.e., debit or credit cards). It seems fair to me. 😉

Here are my thoughts:

Soccer requires very little equipment—just a safe open space, a ball, and cones, flags, or objects to mark out goals. This simplicity makes soccer affordable and accessible to communities with limited resources. However, the way fees are structured often creates a divide!

The Cost of Playing:

It’s a bit frustrating that we often divide players into recreational and competitive categories based on adult opinions rather than the players’ hopes, dreams, and potential. For less physically mature players, adults often set goals like having fun, staying active, and enjoying the game with friends. Costs should reflect this. On the other hand, more physically mature players are encouraged to seek advanced training, travel more, and play additional games, which should justify different fees.

Balancing the Scales:

To address this issue, I propose a FUNdamental approach where recreational fees are paid with ‘recreational money’—Monopoly Money. To ensure that soccer remains accessible to all, regardless of financial background. This inclusive approach, detailed in the (FUNdamental SOCCER – Bill of Rights!), promises a brighter, less expensive future for youth soccer programs.

Eliminating Tryouts and Labels:

By eliminating tryouts and introducing ‘Invite Ins,’ we can make parents from all financial backgrounds feel welcome and encouraged to participate. Additionally, removing the ‘recreational player’ label and calling all of them simply ‘soccer players’ supports this inclusive approach. Once the game starts, everyone is part of the fun and competition—that’s what soccer games are all about 😊.

In my 5 decades serving children, I have yet to run across any child/player who, before the game started, said: Today…

  • “I will not do my best!”
  • “I will try to make as many mistakes as possible.”
  • “I am just going to have some FUN doing what I want to do.”
  • “I will try to embarrass myself, my teammates, my coach, and my parents!”

Labeling everyone as a ‘soccer player’ can help reduce the pressure on young players and their families to focus solely on winning and performance. This might lead to a more enjoyable and less stressful experience for children.

A Path Forward:

Focusing on participation rather than competition in younger age groups helps coaches and players concentrate on skill development and personal growth. More importantly, it fosters a positive, low-pressure environment that supports their well-being. This approach not only encourages long-term involvement but also promises higher retention rates and a broader base of participants, painting a hopeful picture for the future of youth soccer programs.

Ultimately, whether this idea gains traction depends on the views of local soccer leaders. If they are open to the concept, it could be a great way to promote the sport and make it more accessible to everyone.

Conclusion:

Soccer’s beauty lies in its simplicity and accessibility. Let’s ensure that the game’s financial structure reflects these values, allowing everyone to enjoy the sport without unnecessary barriers.
