🔁 Before Youth Referees Walk Away (Part 2)

Real Voices, Real Reflections …

The response to my first article, Before They Walk Away: Youth Referees, was both heartening and eye-opening. Coaches, parents, former players, and longtime advocates chimed in not just with support but also with bold ideas, biting honesty, and a whole lot of love for the game.

I heard the whispers of truth. And now, it’s time to amplify them …

💭 “Is the whole structure bass-ackwards?” — Bill Howe

Bill’s reflections go deeper than critique, rooted in firsthand experience. His 13-year-old son officiated for a year, bravely stepping onto fields where, as Bill put it, “Most games were okay, but a few… well…!” Those “few” hinted at something troubling, situations that made the job feel more punishing than empowering.

“Young referees are leaving because of the environment we throw them into. The expectations are unrealistic & in more than a few cases, potentially unsafe.”

His son didn’t walk away because he lacked skills or maturity; he walked away because the adult-driven structure around youth games made it unnecessarily hard. That tells us a lot.

Bill’s deeper message challenges us all to consider what the game would be like if we truly prioritized play over pressure. Bill challenges us to zoom out and rethink the entire system:

“As soon as uniformed players, referees, coaches, schedules & standings are present, there is no going back… Drop the competition focus on children until they are 12, if not older.”

He reminds us that his love for the game didn’t start with leagues—it started with friends and a football. And maybe, just maybe, that’s what we’re missing.

🎧 “Let them wear headphones!” — Glenn Stanis

In a moment equal parts satire and truth, Glenn writes:

“Maybe all youth games should be played in a hard plastic bubble with parents on the outside… I also think referees should be allowed to wear noise-canceling headphones and play their favorite music.”

Honestly? Not a terrible idea. (Patent pending. Let us know if you’re in on the plastic bubble and headphone business!)

Austin reminds us what this is all supposed to be about:

“Soccer is a game based on FUN and JOY and SKILLFUL and LOVING memories… where education is more important than just winning.”

Please reread that slowly. It might be the pep talk youth sports need most right now.

Sometimes a single sentence speaks volumes, and occasionally, it gives us the nudge to keep charging forward (whistle in one hand, yellow and red card in the other 😊).

Let’s hope the decision-makers will listen, learn, lead, and help us help the youth referees before they walk away. ____________________________________________________________________

🔍 What Have We Learned (So Far?)

The environment young referees are dropped into is often overwhelming.

The structure of youth soccer might be due for reimagining.

Respect and fun should be foundational, not optional.

We all have a role in changing the culture, even if it starts with a smile or a thank you.
