Affirmative Action in Hunting for Female Coaches.

 by  Coach Diane Boettcher

I just spent a week in Oregon with my cousin- a mom who plays soccer and coaches the local high school varsity team. Her own daughter went to the Dark Side- tried out for volleyball.

Anyhow, I have always been one to tout the great benefits of positive male role models for adolescent girls- men interested in their development as people and the validation these positive men give to girls’ athletic pursuits. As a female athlete of the ’70’s, I find the whole thing refreshing contrast to the “girls’ athletic association” organization foist on us as our only avenue of participation. Yet, I know I was a product of the affirmative action in hunting for female coaching role models and the subsequent ghetto where women only get jobs coaching women. My pitch is to get the soccer moms coaching their sons as well as daughters.  Priceless..!
