Becky Burleigh:

Pioneering Success

Becky Burleigh, a trailblazing figure in women’s soccer, began her coaching career at the University of Florida, where she became the head coach of the women’s soccer team. Under her leadership, the team won a national championship, and Burleigh became known for her innovative coaching style and commitment to her players’ development both on and off the field. Her success has inspired countless women to pursue coaching careers and has shown that women can excel at the highest levels of the sport.

Karina LeBlanc:

From the Field to the Boardroom, A Trailblazer!

Karina LeBlanc, a retired Olympic bronze medalist and professional soccer player, holds the distinction of being one of Canada’s longest-serving soccer athletes. Her illustrious career spanned nearly 18 years at the international level, during which she participated in five FIFA World Cups and two Olympic Games, helping to make her and her team household names across the country. Among her many accolades, Karina’s hometown of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, honored her in 2019 by dedicating a soccer field in her name—The Karina LeBlanc Field. In 2020, she was further recognized with her induction into the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame.

Beyond her athletic achievements, Karina has made significant contributions to society through her work as a global leader and motivational speaker. She has delivered powerful keynote addresses at prestigious events such as the United Nations General Assembly and the United Nations Race Against Climate Change. Karina’s dynamic and authentic speaking style allows her to connect with diverse audiences, from Fortune 500 companies to small businesses and large public events, including Canada’s 150th Celebration and Women Empowerment Conferences.

In 2018, Karina took on the role of Head of Women’s Soccer for CONCACAF, where she led efforts to develop and grow the women’s game across 41 countries, using soccer as a tool to empower young women globally. Despite facing personal challenges, including a serious health scare after the birth of her daughter during the COVID-19 pandemic, Karina continues to inspire others. As an advocate for inclusion, diversity, and humanitarianism, she encourages individuals to push through adversity and strive to be the best versions of themselves.

Karina LeBlanc’s journey from the soccer field to leadership and advocacy roles demonstrates her unwavering commitment to excellence and her passion for positively impacting the world.

Emma Hayes:

A Leading Force in Women’s Soccer

Emma Hayes is a highly respected and successful soccer coach, best known for her role as Chelsea Women’s Soccer Club manager. Since taking charge in 2012, Hayes has transformed Chelsea into one of the top teams in women’s soccer, both domestically and internationally. Under her leadership, the team has won multiple Women’s Super League (WSL) titles, FA Cups, and the FA Women’s League Cup. In 2021, she guided Chelsea to the UEFA Women’s Champions League final, marking a historic achievement for the club.

Hayes began her coaching career in the United States, working with the Long Island Lady Riders and as an assistant coach at Iona College before moving on to head coach roles at different levels. She later became the first female manager in the English Premier League when she took charge of Chelsea Reserves in 2006. Her extensive experience in the U.S. and U.K. has contributed to her tactical acumen and deep understanding of the game.

Beyond her success on the pitch, Hayes is a prominent advocate for women’s soccer, often speaking out on issues such as gender equality, the development of the women’s game, and the need for better resources and opportunities for female athletes. Her impact on the sport extends beyond her own achievements, as she continually pushes for broader recognition and support for women in soccer.

Coach Hayes’ combination of tactical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to advancing women’s soccer has earned her widespread admiration and established her as one of the most influential figures in the sport today.

Emma Hayes was named Head Coach of the United States women’s national team starting after the WSL season. She began her tenure in May 2024. Hayes had only two months to prepare the USWNT for the Olympics: their first game (of four “friendlies”) with Hayes at the helm was June 1. Despite her short time with the team, she took them through an undefeated Olympics run, winning the Gold medal game against Brazil on August 10, 2024.

Final Notes:

As I wrap up this look at three incredible women who have left their mark on soccer, it’s clear that their stories are just the beginning. They’ve shown us what’s possible when passion and determination take center stage, and their influence is still unfolding.

These trailblazers remind us why it’s so important to support and celebrate female coaches in our soccer communities. By doing so, we’re not just honoring their achievements; we’re also paving the way for the next generation of female leaders in the game.

So let’s keep the momentum going. Whether you’re a coach, a parent, or just a fan, there are plenty of ways to get involved and make a difference. Support women in soccer, advocate for equal opportunities, and help create a playing field where everyone can thrive.

Thank you for possibly joining and being a part of the SOCCERevolution. Here’s to breaking more barriers and celebrating even more amazing trailblazers in the future!

As the co-owner of Perfectly Plumb Publishing, where we create family-friendly stories and games, my passion for storytelling and community engagement extends into every facet of my life. I'm also proud to be one of the supporting founders working alongside Koach Karl at FUNdamental Soccer, contributing to the 2024 SOCCERevolution Movement. My journey with soccer began in childhood, playing from 3rd to 6th grade. A defining moment from that time was when my mother, despite having no prior experience in soccer, stepped up to coach my team after we lost three coaches in one season. Her dedication and resourcefulness kept our team together and led us to a winning season. Her example of leadership, teamwork, and resilience continues to inspire me today. As I support my young nephews and nieces who are just beginning their soccer journeys, I remain deeply committed to the values and mission of FUNdamental Soccer. My involvement in the SOCCERevolution Movement is driven by a desire to empower and uplift the next generation of soccer players and coaches, especially the women who are breaking new ground in the sport.
