An Official Alternative Pathway for the Beautiful Game
(Inspired by Skip Gilbert’s hope that the Alternative Pathway – TAKES OFF!)

In my last article, “Start Smarter, Keep Them Longer,” I shared a challenge from Skip Gilbert, former CEO of US Youth Soccer, and a Wikipedia-recognized global sports consultant who stated:
“We can’t keep doing the same thing and expect different results.”
That message lit a fire under me to continue sharing my SOCCERevolution project. A bold, joyful, and practical pathway for youth soccer, one designed to spark a lifelong love of the game for everyone.
Why Soccer Needs an Alternative Pathway
We don’t have a shortage of kids starting soccer.
We have a shortage of kids staying in soccer.
By their mid-teens, too many (70%-75%) players hang up their cleats.
The reasons vary, but not falling in love with the game is at the top of the list.
If we’re serious about real change, we can’t just tweak the top. We’ve got to reimagine the foundation.

In this article, I want to share a youth soccer reboot, something that puts joy, creativity, and development at the center again. It might just be the best thing to happen to youth soccer in decades. The format is already being used successfully in Europe, and both Skip and I hope it will take off in the USA. ⭐ . So, here is the alternative pathway:
Quad-Goal Soccer isn’t a gimmick. It’s grounded in European results that keep kids engaged and developing, and it takes the proven benefits of small-sided play one step further by adding more goals, more decisions, and more joy.*
Footnote:
Belgium, Spain, and the Netherlands rebuilt their youth systems around small-sided games, and participation soared while dropouts declined. Quad-Goal Soccer builds on that foundation, offering a next-level pathway designed not just to develop skills, but to keep kids loving the game long-term.

- It’s simple: four goals instead of two.
- Games of 2v2, 3v3, or 4v4 games

Why It Works
⚽ More scoring → More celebrations, more fun.
👟 Smaller teams → Fewer opponents to take the ball away..
⚽More ball touches → Skill grows with repetition.
🧠 More decisions → Multiple attacking options require more thinking.
🧠 More decisions → Multiple defending options require more thinking
🎨 More creativity → With more goals, kids experiment without fear.

More laughs → Joy drives retention.

And yes — every goal deserves a celebration.
(“Encourage?”) Discover why celebrations matter.
Cartwheels, knee-slides, airplane arms… even glitter cannons if you dare.
Because joy is the fuel that keeps kids in the game.
The only must-have rule: Everyone must learn an after-goal celebration
Every one of these benefits serves the ultimate goal: Keep kids playing. Keep kids loving the game. Keep the majority of kids and the late bloomers in the game by making soccer fun again. It’s not a step backward. It’s a lifeline forward.

Not a Replacement — A Pathway
This isn’t about replacing the traditional game we love. It’s about complementing it, giving soccer the official alternative pathway Skip Gilbert called for.

Decisions by the People (a.k.a. Local Communities)
Since every community is different, locals create their own Quad Game Rules.
• Team sizes
• Field setup
• Number of balls in play
- With or without goalkeepers
- With or without referees
You don’t need a giant rulebook written in lawyer-speak.
You may want to consider using the following as the foundation: 😊
FUNdamental SOCCER – U6 Playing Rules – Fundamental Soccer
FUNdamental SOCCER – U8 Playing Rules – Fundamental Soccer
FUNdamental SOCCER U-10 Playing Rules – Fundamental Soccer
FUNdamental SOCCER – U-12 Playing Rules – Fundamental Soccer

Ready to Try It?
The rules are simple.
The benefits are immediate.
The smiles are guaranteed.
Skip Gilbert’s words still echo: “Soccer does need an official alternative pathway. Koach Karl, I hope yours takes off!”
This isn’t just a distant dream. It’s a format we could roll out tomorrow, with just a few extra goals and a willingness to reimagine the game. The Quad-Goal Game is all about having FUN, including everyone, and honing FUNdamental skills—there is no pressure to win. It’s like creating a playground where every kid feels like a star player. This approach taps into what kids need to grow—confidence, independence, and a sense of belonging.
And guess what? It makes them Love Soccer even more, keeping them hooked for Life! We believe Quad Goal Soccer can be that pathway.
Now the question is —
👉 Who’s ready to play?

Please help by taking action to implement the Quad-Goal Game in your local, state, regional, and national youth soccer programs. Let’s pave the way for a brighter future for young athletes and curb the current dropout rate!
✨ “The future of soccer isn’t measured by how many trophies kids win today, but by how many still love the game tomorrow.” 💥⚽
