Help is There (If You Only Go and Look For It)

Whether you are a young aspiring official or one who has some years of experience, you are looking to reach the next level in your career and you are not necessarily getting the help and support you would like from those around you.  What do you do and where can you look for help?

If you are not getting the help you feel you need, either you are not taking advantage of what is available to you, you are not looking in the right place or you are not putting forth the required effort.

One thing an official can always look for is a good and reliable mentor or mentors.  Always get as much information as you can from as many people as you can.

There are some well experienced, and yes, retired officials around who have much knowledge and experience at various levels of the game and who can offer guidance, a wealth of information and practical applications to help you become a better, respected and successful official.

Ask around, make calls, and try to locate one of these people who, in most cases, will more than likely be very happy to help an honestly interested individual who is looking to learn and improve his/her skills.

For a start begin with anyone who assigns you games or the people you are officiating with.  They may give you some valuable leads or information.

If that is not satisfying you, use the information on your computer.  These days, there is a wealth of information there.  You can also call the leagues or clubs in your area for information and help.

None of us got where we are today without someone’s help and support so it is really up to you to decide how badly you want to reach your goals and how hard you are willing to work to reach those goals.

After you find those mentors and you reach your goals, you will be able to look back at your decisions and appreciate the hard work it took on your part to get you there and the work your mentors put forth to help you on your path.

Remember, help and support is there.  It’s up to you to look for it, find it and make it work for YOU.
