"Should The First Practice Be Informal?"

By Koach Karl Dewazien & Coach Chad
'One-On-One' with Koach Karl

Coach Chad - Should the first practice be informal (e.g., meet players and parent, hand out jerseys, introduce the season, have parents scrimmage to entertain the kids and break the ice, then picnic)? Then, the subsequent practices, follow the 9 step routine?

Koach Karl - Yes, Yes, Yes, You may want to add a discussion on 'team rules' ...being late for practice; unable to attend practice; behavior on the sidelines, etc... Make it very clear that you are the coach and once practice begins YOU are in charge...! As for the 'parents game' you may want to consider not having them play against the kids because of possible injury -- but, do have the parents play each other & have the kids instruct them while they are playing. Let the parent 'walk/run a mile in the players shoes' before the season begins :)
